The definition of what a library is and does has changed drastically. It has been increasingly recognized as a learning commons with the implementation of maker spaces.

For our final #EID100project, we decided to create a video educating others on maker spaces, specifically the Digital Media Experience (DME) lab. Located on the third floor of the Ryerson Student Learning Centre, the DME is a Ryerson University Library and Archives owned resource that offers workshops, provides peer-to-peer instruction, 3D printing, Arduino kits, virtual reality, and so much more. Our target market includes students and prospective students at Ryerson University with an interest in exploring STEM fields and very little knowledge on where to begin.

We created the video with the intended purpose of:

  • Gaining awareness of what the DME offers to students

  • Bringing more students into the DME space

  • Demystify STEM fields to all students

In the video, two very helpful advisors, Marissa and Jayden, explain the goals and vision of the DME. We then bring in two students, Shaimaa and Gedeon, who have never visited the DME to try out virtual reality. After losing track of some time, two more students come, awaiting to play with the Oculus. Eugene, who has used the Oculus at the DME in the past has brought his friend Xiang Ni. The result? Oodles of fun discovering what emerging technologies have to offer.
